Where would any of us be without our mothers? The same can be said of Jesus. This woman, known as the mother of Jesus, obeyed the word of the Lord and became a vessel for the incarnation of Jesus. She loved and nurtured Him. From a heart full of wonder to a heart torn apart, she mothered God’s Son. In this vignette she releases Him. Here they are at a wedding, a significant cultural tradition. Though not His wedding, this occasion was still a releasing, a sending forth of Jesus into His divine purpose for the glory of God.
A Wedding
A wedding is one of the most exciting of cultural experiences. It speaks of future hope, the continuing of family and peoples. A wedding sends the young couple into the future with blessings both spiritual and physical. It is a sending forth into the world for the continuance of humanity and Jesus is at this wedding.
A Sending Forth
This wedding in Cana, though not His own, was the launch for Jesus’ ministry. I wonder if God’s Spirit prompted Mary to send Him out this way. Did pride and fear mingle in her soul? While Jesus, doesn’t believe His time has come, this is still his mother after all, and He whose Father gave the law “Honour thy father and thy mother,” did so. The Creator stepped into this situation and His work as always, exceeded man’s expectations. He improved on the natural. When touched by the Master, the natural became supernatural.
For the Glory of God
What is the result? God is glorified. His disciples see this kid from Nazareth, Joseph’s son, fulfilled the prophecies. As He became a man and stepped into the role assigned by the Father, they believed and God was glorified. Though not His wedding, this occasion was still a releasing, a sending forth of Jesus into His divine purpose for the glory of God.
