God of All Circumstances

by Esther Griggs

When we look at 1 Samuel 16, we see the hand of God preparing a young man for his calling. He is, after all, the God of all circumstances. But behind the scenes there is a father, a young man and a distressed King. But God, beyond each of their views, was setting the stage for His own Son to reign on the throne of this young man He was preparing.

A Father

First, we consider a father. This father’s youngest son was invaluable, especially, in caring for the sheep. Jesse had other sons but none like David. He had been at the sacrifice when David was anointed. He couldn’t see the future. Still, when King Saul needed him, he released him. He sent not only David but also a donkey loaded with gifts for the king. Later, after David had left, he received the news: “Please allow David to stand before me, for he has found favour in my sight.” He must have been proud upon receiving this news.

A Young Man

Second, we look at our young man, skilful at playing the harp. His reputation caused one of Saul’s servants to suggest him. It was also known that the Lord was with him. He came and stood before Saul, and the passage reads, “He loved him greatly.” Saul made David his armour-bearer.

The King

Third, we look at the king. The Spirit of God departed from King Saul. But God sent a distressing spirit, which troubled him. When the distressing spirit troubled him, David’s playing of the harp refreshed Saul. Increasingly, Saul was losing his capacity to rule, and God was raising up another. Behind the scenes there was a father, a young man and a distressed King. But God, beyond each of their view, was setting the stage for His own Son to reign on the throne of this young man He was preparing.
