The psalmist tells us that children are a heritage from the Lord, a reward. The language of the New King James puts it this way, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.” He goes on to say a father of many children will not be ashamed and will speak with his enemies in the gates. Children provide joy, serve as reminders, and provide hope for the future.
Joy
Television commercials capitalize on the joy we receive from children. A father returns home to the voice of a little one, “Daddy we missed you,” a child’s eyes light up the world when opening a gift from their loved one, or their wonder and amazement as they encounter nature. They make us feel special, provide joy and amuse us with their actions and words.
Serve to Remind Us
Children remind us of things like innocence and humility, of curiosity and enthusiasm. Jesus loved children. He told His listeners that the kingdom of heaven is made up of such as children. When He encountered them, He did not turn them away but rather directed His disciples to let them come. He also said, “Unless you are converted and become as little children you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Hope for the Future
Children are our hope for the future. Education, at home, in the church and the public arena demonstrate societal priorities to instill traditions, values and knowledge. Jesus said, “Whoever causes one of these little ones, who believe in Me, to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” Children provide joy, serve as reminders, and provide hope for the future. Thank you Father for children. Help us serve them well.
