A splendid privilege of being a Canadian in the United States is two months of thanksgiving. It can be easy to return to taking things for granted once the holiday has passed, but for me, once it is over in Canada, I still have one to anticipate, giving me more time to contemplate the things for which I am grateful. This week, I focus my gratitude on the family of God. Within the family of God I have been born into a new family, I have been nurtured in the family, and rejoice to bear fruit.
Born Into a New Family
My natural family attended church more than Sundays. They were part of a bigger family known as the church. While my parents taught us the best they knew how, it was the broader reach of the body of Christ which helped to bring me into the fold, and discipled me through avenues such as Sunday School and Christian camping. Though I have lived in many different places and visited many countries, I am part of this larger community of faith wherever I go.
Nurtured in the Family
My soul has been nurtured within the family of God. “They are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight,” says the Psalmist. I too, thank the LORD for the many people who nurtured me as a growing Christian and those who in difficult circumstances, have come around to bolster me in my faith and offer a hand to lift me up or keep me from falling; true brothers and sisters within Christ’s body.
Bearing Fruit
Yet one of the most exciting parts of being in a family is when there is new birth. Jesus tells us there is more joy in heaven when one sinner repents than over ninety-nine who do not need to repent. The celebration of christian baptism allows new christians the opportunity to share their stories. Sharing their stories strengthens them but it also encourages us. We see God doing His work, and bringing new believers into the body. As His body, one plants, another waters but God causes the increase.
Therefore, my heart is full as I consider this great provision of God, His family. Within the family of God I have been born into a new family, I have been nurtured in the family and rejoice to bear fruit.
