When God spoke to Cain prior to murdering his brother, he said, “Sin lies at the door.” Cain did not know of Jesus, who would in the fulfillment of time, declare Himself to be the door. Because Jesus, the Son of God, came as a man, we know Jesus as the door. But what does that mean? Let’s consider Jesus as the door to an everlasting kingdom, an abundant life and of salvation.
An Everlasting Kingdom
First we look to the scripture to understand the everlasting kingdom. The Psalmist wrote, “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.” Jesus, the door to the kingdom, told His listeners to make seeking for the kingdom of God, a priority in their lives. He used parables to describe it. He also said that it consists of those who are like children. Paul in his letter to the Romans wrote, “the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Jesus is the door to this kingdom. It is through Him that we gain entrance, and come to know the pleasures within its pasturelands.
An Abundant Life
Next we see Jesus as the door to an abundant life. “I have come that they might have life and that they may have it more abundantly,” He declared. Like sheep we find pasture, satisfaction, the restoring of our souls, He leads us in right living. He is the One to carry our burdens and be a light to our footsteps. He gives us rest and so much more.
Salvation
In addition, Jesus is the door to salvation. He rescues us spiritually and offers security. He is our refuge. We read in Acts 4:12, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Jesus is that name. He keeps us from he who would steal, kill and destroy.
When like Cain, we face temptation, Jesus is the door. We look to Him for salvation, for the abundant life, and entrance to His everlasting kingdom.
