God deals in the affairs of man. Because He is not visible, it is easy to go our way and think otherwise. In Genesis 20, we read of God and two men. One had received the promises of God, the other was a King. God intervened once more to protect Sarah. God intervened, dealt with Abimelech, and with Abraham.
God Intervened
Abraham returned to an old pattern. It was what he did when his eyes wandered to the situation around him in fear, rather than to the God of the promises. As in the previous case, God dealt with the King who had taken Sarah, and then the King dealt with Abraham.
Abimelech
This king took Abraham at his word. God, however, gave him a dream accusing him of having another man’s wife. Abimelech defended himself, and blamed Abraham. God was quick to point out that He had kept him from sin against Himself by preventing Abimelech from touching Sarah. Then He told him to return Sarah and have Abraham pray for him. “But if you don’t return her to him, you can be sure that you and all your people will die.”
Abraham
When Abimelech confronted him, Abraham explained why he had done so. He thought it was a godless place and feared for his life. Abimelech restored his wife and gave him gifts to make up for any misdoing on his part. Abraham prayed for Abimelech, and God restored fertility to their women. God had made them infertile because of Sarah. God intervened, dealt with Abimelech, and Abraham.
