The most comforting scripture in Christendom is Psalm 23, “The Lord is My Shepherd.” When Jesus came to earth He alluded to Himself as “the Good Shepherd.” The gift of Christmas was Jesus. He is the good shepherd, He knows His own and is known by them.
The Good Shepherd
When Jesus declared Himself the Good Shepherd, He said He gives His life for the sheep. We know this to be true because of His death on the cross. He makes it clear that He laid his life down willingly to protect His flock.
He Knows His Own
The Good Shepherd knows His own. Hear the Words of King David, “Oh Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up. You understand my thoughts afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down. and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But Behold O Lord, you know it altogether.” And Jesus said, “He calls His own sheep by name.”
His Sheep Know Him
His sheep know Him. They recognize His voice. He goes ahead and they follow. They don’t follow a stranger. In the presence of the Good Shepherd there is no want. He leads by still waters and in green pastures, in paths of righteousness. He restores the soul and even in death’s dark valley, as our shepherd we fear no evil because He is near. He leads into abundant life, eternal life and no one snatches them from the Father’s hand.
This good shepherd is ours this Christmas.
