Tell Me the Old, Old Story: The Wisemen

by Esther Griggs

While Abraham left everything to Issac, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them to the land of the east. Were the Wisemen descendants of Abraham? Isaiah wrote, “Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” Were these magi the fulfilment of Isaiah’s words? How about the words of Moses in Numbers 24:17: “I see Him but not now, I behold Him but not near; A star shall come out of Jacob., a sceptre shall rise out of Israel.” These scriptures indeed point to an historical event recorded by the disciple Matthew; a story of Wisemen from the east, who met with royalty, encountered the Christ child, and adhered to the highest call.

Met With Royalty

These foreigners met with royalty. While not everyone gets an audience with a king, these visitors from the east warranted an interview with King Herod. Though Herod was evil, his scribes found answers to the questions they sought. Soon the Magi journeyed to Bethlehem.

Encountered the Christ Child

In Bethlehem they encountered the Christ Child. The star stopped over the house where Jesus was. Imagine the relief that elicited such joy from these weary travellers. They recognized His kingship and gave Him gifts worthy of royalty.

Adhered to the Highest Call

These esteemed men of the East, seekers of the new King, recognized the Voice which is above all thrones and dominions, all powers and positions, and heeded His warning to return home another way.

These scriptures indeed point to an historical event recorded by the disciple Matthew; a story of wisemen from the east, who met with royalty, encountered the Christ child, and adhered to the highest call.
