Reach Higher

by Esther Griggs

Several years ago while in a training session for my job, I learned a very practical lesson. For some reason this lesson made an impact and has stayed with me, unlike some others which scattered like the seeds of a dandelion.

We were asked to face the wall, on which hung pieces of paper. Taking a marker, we were asked to reach as high as we could and make a mark. We did so, and turned to face the instructor, feeling pleased with our efforts. At this point, the instructor asked us to do it again and to make the mark higher this time. Groaning. we turned around, but within minutes each of us had found a way to improve over our last mark. For me, I extended the marker by holding it at the farthest point rather than nearest the paper.

I learned from that simple lesson to reach higher. to have some confidence in my abilities, and to try again. In Hebrews 12 of the New Testament we read:

” Therefore, strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.”

I see in this passage an invitation to reach higher, to not give up, to find ways to improve. There is healing in it!

Grace and peace to you as you reach higher.
